King Charles of UK - 75th Birthday Reply (2023)

I received this reply today from the UK. I had written to King Charles in November for his 75th Birthday.

The envelope is the usual from King Charles. The front features the new postmark that was updated a few months ago to reflect the Royal Mail's switch to Mailmark machines. And the back featured King Charles's coat of arms.

Inside is a folded card. The front of the card features King Charles's Cypher engraved in gold.

The inside features a photo of King Charles, along with a typed message and printed on signature. This is different than Charles's normal Birthday reply, because this is a milestone Birthday, his 75th. We saw a similar folded card for Charles's 70th Birthday

Interestingly, King Charles did not choose a coronation photo for his birthday card. The photo is from The Scotland National Service of Thanksgiving and Dedication at St Giles' Cathedral in Edinburgh, Scotland. The photo was taken on July 5, 2023 by Chris Jackson.

The message is the typical sort. Expect this is the first time I've gotten a reply from Charles written in the first person.

The card says:

I am enormously grateful to you for thinking of me on my 75th Birthday and for sending me such a touching message.

This brings you my warmest good wishes.

The Cambridges - Christmas Reply (2021)

I received this reply in March 2022. I actually received this reply twice, postmarked 4 days apart. The two replies were exactly the same.

The envelope was the usual from the couple

Inside is a flat card. The front of the card features a photo of the couple that was taken in September in the card ride to/from the No Time to Die world premiere in London.

The photo was released on the couple's social media to mark the New Year. The family did release a different photo for Christmas that was used on their person christmas card list to friends, family and people they work with. It was fairly common at the time for them to use a different photo for the photocard than what was released to mark that event.

The back of the card is the usual sort from the couple.

The card says:

Thank you for the kind Christmas message which you sent to The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.

It was so appreciated by Their Royal Highnesses who send you their warmest wishes for the New Year.

The Cambridges - Christmas Reply (2020)

I received this reply back in 2021 from The Cambridges (who are now known as The Wales.) I had written to the family at the end of 2020 to wish them a Merry Christmas.

The envelope is the usual, that Prince William & Princess Kate still use today. The only difference is the postmark is still the one from Queen Elizabeth II's reign.

The card is the usual flat card we see from them. The photo on the front was taken by Matt Porteous at the family's home Anmer Hall in Norfolk. This photo was also used on the couple's official christmas card that they send out to their person christmas card list. (It is not uncommon for Royals to have multiple versions of Christmas cards that get sent out to different groups of people.) This was the first time (at least in recent years) that the Wales had used the same photo for both their person Christmas card and their card to well-wishers.

The back of the card is the usual. It features the coronet of a child of the heir apparent above the name of their office, Kensington Palace. The message is similar to past years, although they change it up slightly each year.

The card says:

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis thank you for your very kind message at Christmas.

This was most thoughtful of you and greatly appreciated by Their Royal Highnesses who send you their best wishes for a Happy New Year.

Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark - 55th Birthday Reply (2023)

I received this reply earlier this year. I had written to Crown Prince Frederik for his birthday in Mary.

The envelope is the usual from the couple.

The card is identical to past Birthday replies from the Prince. The couple use the same flat cards each year, so they can make the in bulk, save money and not have any waste year to year. That is why the card does not have any specific mention to the year or age of the Prince.

Every few years, when they have to print of new cards, they do slightly change their card. You can see the past evolutions here.

The card says:

His Royal Highness The Crown Prince has asked me to thank you for your kind congratulations on the occasion of his birthday.

King Willem-Alexander & Queen Maxima of the Netherlands - Reply for Short Story I Wrote (2023)

I received this reply from the Netherlands a while ago. This reply is extra special for two reasons. 1) The Netherland Royals changed their policy about what they reply to a few years ago. So, we no longer get replies for Birthdays, Christmas, etc. The last reply I got from them was for Christmas 2020.

2) The 2nd reason this reply is extra special is because I had written to them to share the short story I had written "What Does a Queen Do?". The short story takes place in the Netherlands and references King Willem-Alexander & Queen Maxima. So, I had wanted to share the story with them.

My short story What Does a Queen Do? is a silly, child like story about a little girl from the Netherlands who dreams about being Queen. The short story was published recent in an anthology, The Spaces in Between. You can find the Anthology here

The letter is similar to the letter I received from the Netherland Royals in 2015. The images doesn't show it, but in the upper right is an embossed coat of arms.

It looks like they have some sort of mail program that they use. Instead of writing and formatting a letter, they fill information into the fields of the program, and it generates the letter. (This would also allows them to easily store the recipient and letter's information in a database. And we know many Monarchies use databases to store information on people.) Everything in Dutch looks to be the pre-printed template. And then the type-writer font is what was put in the various fields.

I doesn't show it clearly in the photo, but there are little dots in the 4 corners of the area for my address. That would probably be used from alignment, so they can ensure the address would be scene through the envelope window.

The letter says:

No. 23/mwq

Dear Miss Daly,
Thank you very much for your friendly letter and a copy of your short story What Does a Queen Do? than you recently sent to Their Majesties the King and Queen of the Netherlands.
Your kind gesture is much appreciated.
Your sincerely,
Miss Jacqueline Zaaijer
Personal Advisor to His Majesty the King and
Her Majesty the Queen of the Netherlands.

I don't know what the 23/mwq means exactly. But my 2015 letter had 15 at the beginning of the "No." so the first number seems to be the year.

Hereditary Prince Alois - Birthday Reply (2023)

I received this reply a while ago from Liechtenstein. I had written to Hereditary Prince Alois of Liechtenstein in June for his birthday.

The envelope was the usual from the Liechtenstein Royals

Inside is the usual card from the Liechtenstein Royals. I scanned the card against a black background, so you can see the textured edge. There is a lovely embossed coat of arms on the top of card. You can't see it well, but it has a lovely feel.

The card is signed by Alois. "AL" for Alois Liechtenstein? The signature is slightly different than past replies from Prince Alois, so I believe the signature is real.

The card says:

Many thanks for your kind wishes

on the occasion of my birthday

King Carl Gustaf of Sweden - Golden Jubilee Reply (2023)

I received this reply a while ago from Sweden. I had written to King Carl Gustaf in September to congratulate him on his Golden Jubilee. I have not received a reply from Sweden in a few years. So, this was a special treat.

The front of the envelope is the usual from the Swedish Royals, with the Coat of Arms of Sweden, with  "Royal Court" written underneath.

The back of the envelope features one of King Carl Gustaf's Golden Jubilee Logo.

Inside is a folded card. The front of the cards features another version of the King Carl Gustaf's Golden Jubilee Logo. The first line is King Carl Gustaf's cypher: C & G for Carl Gustaf, XVI as he is the 16th King Carl/Karl/Charles of Sweden. The 2nd and 3rd line say "Jubilee 50 Years" in Swedish.

The inside of the card features a photo of King Carl Gustaf along with a message and printed on signature. The photo was taken in 2022 by Thron Ullberg in the Hall of State at the Royal Palace in Stockholm. This room is where King Carl Gustaf's enthronement ceremony took place in September 1973.

The card says:

My sincerest gratitude to you for the kind greetings sent to me in connection with Jubilee.

Guide to Writing to the Royals for Christmas (2023)

The Royals absolutely love to get letters and cards from the public, and Christmas is no different!

Writing for the 1st time?

If you are writing to the Royals for the 1st time (or want a refresher on the basics) check out our "How To" tab. This post will only cover the specifics for Christmas 2023.

When to start writing?

My feeling is Christmas letters and cards should ideally arrive sometime in December. So I usually start sending out my letters in late November.

You don't want to start writing too early as it can affect what you get in reply. (Same with being too late.) If they don't have the Christmas reply printed when they open your letter, the office staff may just send you some generic reply, as they don't want mail stacking up in the office. Or alternatively, your letter could get set aside and as it is at the bottom of the pile, it could be one of the last to get replies.

Send by Date?

It is always hard to choose a "Send by Date" to recommend to you all. When you should send your letters varies: from country to country, where you are sending it to, the type of mail (economy, standard, first-class, priority, etc.), if it is a standard size envelope, etc.

Our general recommended Send by Date for International Mail is:

Monday, December 11th!

This may not get your letter/card there by Christmas, but it should be there in a timely fashion. I don't think it is vital that your letter/card arrive before Christmas, as many Royal offices won't even get to your Christmas letter/card until after the holiday.

If it is important to you that your letter/card arrive by Christmas you can find the exact "send by date" for your country by checking out your national postal service's website. Some of you may need to send your letter earlier, while others will have more time.

Remember during the Christmas season, it takes longer for mail to arrive.

What if I miss the Dec 11th Send By Date?

That is okay. Feel free to continue sending your letters/cards after this date, it just may not arrive until after Christmas, or in January.

If you are sending your letter after Christmas, I would re-focus it a little and wish them a Happy New Year and 2023. I think at the latest you can write until the end of the first or second week of January. But do keep in mind that writing late, might also affect what you get in reply. Some royals will only print a limited number of cards, and so if you write too late they might.

Addresses?
You can find all the addresses for the Royals under our "Addresses" tab. The only recent change in mailing addresses is King Charles & Queen Camilla's mail should now be sent to Buckingham Palace.

(We also created a Google Doc a few years ago with all the addresses for the Current European Monarchies, which you can print off.)

Note: The Correspondence Section at Clarence House will continue to handle the Waleses (formerly Cambridges) mail, as that is where the dedicated space, equipment, & staff for handling mail is located. This may change in the future, and we will update you when that happens.

What if I don't celebrate Christmas?
Don't worry! You can still send the Royals a Holiday/ Winter Season/ New Years' letter or card, or whatever it is you are celebrating this season. Be aware, however, most royals send out pre-made cards, that aren't personalized for each person, so their reply may thank you for your Christmas wishes.

What to write?

I very often get asked this question. The answer is, write whatever you feel like writing about. There is no one right answer. As long as you are being respectful and thoughtful, it is hard to go wrong.

For Christmas you could mention things like:

  • Some event in 2023 that was particularly meaningful to you
    • or a cause, royal visit, etc.
    • Coronation, Royal wedding, baby/pregnancy announcement, etc.
  • What you are most excited about in 2024
  • How this royal has inspired you
  • What you admire about the royal family
  • December or January birthdays/anniversaries
  • etc.
We have some sample letters/cards to the Royal on the "How To" tab.

But it's also completely fine to send a pre-made card and just sign your name.

Note:  A lot of monarchies outside Europe are not Christian and don't celebrate Christmas. If you wanted to write to them, I would figure out what it is they are celebrating this time of year, or just send them good wishes for the season/New Year.

What to expect?
The Royals get thousands of Christmas cards and letters each year, full of well-wishes and hopes for the coming year. Unfortunately, most are unable to send out personal responses. Responses vary greatly across the different royals. And, t
here are sadly some royals who don't send replies or don't reply to everyone who writes.

Most respond with a pre-made thank you, and the response will usually be sent sometime in January, or February.  (You might get lucky with a December reply, or be made to wait until March. We have gotten a Christmas Reply in April, May & June before.)

And, do remember that it takes them a while to answer everyone. So, people may get their replies weeks or months apart. You can find a chart of past Christmas Response times here.

You can also check out my replies from past Christmases here.

King Philippe & Queen Mathilde of Belgium - 10th Anniversary of Accession (2023)

A lovely reply arrived recently from Belgium. I had written to King Philippe to express my congratulations on the 10th Anniversary of his accession.

Inside is a flat card similar to the ones I've received from the couple in the past. The date on the card is Belgium's National Day, which is also the anniversary of King's Accession. The mark on the card is from the lining of the envelope as it got stuck to the card.

The card is in French. The stationary has a purple Crown with "Palais Royal" written on the top. It came in a matching  envelope, which you can see here, classified as #1d

The card is in French and Translates to:

The King and Queen were very touched by the message that you were kind enough to send to them on the occasion of the National Day as well as for the ten years of Reign.

Their Majesties thank you very much for this kind attention.

Brussels, July 21st, 2023

Included with the card is a photo of the couple. The photo was taken by Michel Gronemberger and was part of a set of photos released to mark the 10th Anniversary of Accession.

Queen Margrethe of Denmark - Birthday Reply (2023)

I received this reply earlier this year from Denmark. I had written to Queen Margrethe to wish her a happy birthday.

This reply is similar to the replies I've received from Queen Margrethe in the past, except for the fact this is a flat card instead of a letter. This follows the trend of using cards instead of letters for form replies that I started to see with my Christmas 2021 reply.

Queen Sofia of Spain - Condolence for Death of King Constantine (2023)

I received this reply from Spain earlier this year. I had written to Queen Sofia in January to express my condolences on the death of her brother, King Constantine of Greece.

The envelope is the usual from the Spain Royals.

This stationary is different than what I have received from Queen Sofia in the past. The letter features her husband King Juan Carl's Coat of Arms on top. Most of the other replies I have received from Sofia & Juan Carlos were written by the Chief of Protocol and on Stationary featuring King Felipe's Coat of Arms.

This reply is personally written from Queen Sofia (although a form letter others received.) That would probably explain the change in stationary, however it is interesting that it is not Queen Sofia's coat of arms. Another point of interest is that Queen Sofia's name is spelt "Sophia." Sophia is the original spelling of her name. She changed it to Sofia, the Spanish spelling, when she married Juan Carlos. I can recall seeing the SPain Palace use Sophia before when releasing stuff in English.

And while this is a condolence reply from King Constantine of Greece, his name is not explicitly mentioned in the reply.

The letter says:

King Albert of Belgium - Hospitalization (2023)

This reply arrived this week from Belgium. I had written to King Albert to wish him a speedy recovery after he was hospitalized at Cliniques Universitaires Saint-Luc Hospital in June.

The Belgium Royals have over a dozen different envelopes that they use. While I've been writing to them for years, this is the first time I have received this particular envelope. On our post about their envelopes, we have classified this as envelopes #3d.

It is similar to to #3c, my absolute favorite envelope from Queen Paola, expect this does not have the lovely tissue paper purple liner.

This envelope is blank on the front (except of the stuff added after creation, address, postmark, etc.). The back features Belvédère castle's address in French and Dutch along the edge of the flap. Along with a Crown and the name of their residence Belvédère.

Inside is a flat car from King Albert. The card matches the envelope with same Crown with the name of their residence Belvédère underneath.

The card is in French and says:

"His Majesty King Albert II thanks you with all his heart for the wishes for a speedy recovery that you have sent to him."

Queen Camilla - Birthday Reply (2023)

This lovely reply arrived last week from the UK. I had written to Queen Camilla to wish her a happy Birthday.

The envelope is not the usual we see from the British Royals. Although I have received this same style envelope from Queen Elizabeth before

What is unusual from the front of the envelope is the use of real stamps. The two stamps are from the first set of definitive stamps of King Charles that were released during his reign.

I have seen others who got this same reply with a new updated Postmark and pre-paid postage, but looked to be postmarked after my reply. So, the use of stamps could be just a temporary, measure as they are redoing the postmark/pre-paid postage.

The Circle Court Post Office Postmark is one that has been used for years. We don't see it often for normal replies as it is usually just used when you use stamps as you have to cancel the stamp, but don't need to pre-paid for postage.

There is then a 2nd or Double Postmark that was applied when this mail was processed through the Mount Pleasant Post Office. The British Heart Foundation Postmark is applied to all mail processed through the Mount Pleasant Post Office.

The back of the envelope features The Royal Coat of Arms of the United Kingdom that is used by the Monarch. Camilla has a different Coat of Arms. The Palace has likely not yet made a envelope with Camilla's new monogram in this size. Or are trying to use up the stock of existing envelopes.

While being a larger size to accommodate the large card, this is also a different type of envelope. Some might call it a "Flat." It typically used for mailing something thicker (or more pages) than a standard envelope. The envelope is the size of a piece of paper folded in half. And is used less for well-wishers and more for official correspondence. The envelope has a tear strip built into the side to allow for easy opening.

The only time I have received this envelope before was when I received mail from a staff member that was multiple pages

Inside is Queen Camilla's usually sort of Birthday Reply, a large flat card with photo on the front and message on the back. The photo on the front was one of the official Coronation Photos taken Hugo Burnand in the Green Drawing Room on the day of the Coronation.

The back of the card features Camilla's Cypher the Letters "C" for Camilla intertwined with "R" for "Regina" (Latin for Queen), under the Tudor Crown. The signature is autopenned.

The message reads:
I greatly appreciated your birthday Message. So many thanks for your kind thoughts.

King Constantine of Greece - Condolence Reply from Greek Royal Family (2023)

This reply arrive from Greece today. I have written to Queen Anne-Marie to express my condolences for the death of her husband King Constantine II. This is the first reply I've received from the Greek Royals.

The envelope is blue. Blue is a color associated with Greece and the Greek Royal Family.

The back of the card has the family's mailing address.

The front of the card has the Greek Coat of Arms engraved.

The inside of the card has a photo of King Constantine, sailing a ship. Constantine was a very avid sailor, and even completed on the Olympics and won Gold in the Dragon Class of ship in 1960.

Right side of the card features typed message from Queen Anne-Marie and her eldest son Crown Prince Pavlos, who is now head of the Greek Royal Family.  The top fo the card features Queen Anne-Marie & King Constantine's Joint Monogram.

The card says:

Thank you for your kind words which were received with deep appreciation. We are grateful for you support in this difficult time of the passing away of our beloved Husband, Father and Grandfather.

Prince Louis of Wales - Birthday Reply (2023)

I received this lovely reply from the UK a few weeks ago. I had written to wish Prince Louis a happy 5th birthday.

The envelope is the usual from the Waleses. And features the usual postmark

The reply is the usual photocard for the Wales. The front features a photo of Prince Louis that was released by the Palace for Louis's birthday. The photo was taken by Millie Pilkington in Windsor.

The back of the card features a typed message.

The Wales have not changed their stationary since King Charles's accession. The coronet at the top of the card features the coronet of a child of the heir apparent, that William and Kate continue to use.

The message says:

Thank you for the very thoughtful message which you sent for Prince Louis' fifth birthday.
Prince Louis had a fantastic day, and your message was greatly appreciated by The Prince and Princess who send you their very best wishes.

King Philippe & Queen Mathilde of Belgium - Christmas Reply (2021)

I received this Christmas reply a few years ago from King Philippe & Queen Mathilde. The couple replied with their usual Christmas card.

The front of the card is simple, it has a red border with the couple's joint monogram. You have Queen Mathilde's M, interlocked with an F & P for King Philippe. The F & P stand for the different spellings of King Philippe's name in the 3 official languages of Belgium:

  • French: Philippe
  • Dutch: Filip
  • German: Philippe

Inside the card left side has a message. The message is in Belgium's 3 official languages (Dutch, French, German) plus English.  The signatures are printed on and the same as recent years. The 4 children's names are arranged in order of age. The date reflects the new year.

The card says:
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year

Elisabeth Gabriel Emmanuel Eleonore

The right inside side of the cared features a family photo. The photo was taken by Bas Bogaerts in the Royal Greenhouses of Laeken.
